NEW YORK – Barbie Ferreira grew up on the internet. That experience gave the actress and model plenty of material to bring into her role for "Faces of Death" (in theaters April 10), a reimagination of the 1978 cult classic. It's also why she was already friends with one of her castmates, Grammy Award-winning singer Charli XCX.

"I don't remember when we first met, but I know that we were friends on the internet for a long time," Ferreira, 29, says. "We both are Tumblr girls who like similar music. We have the same stylist. Our lives are very intertwined in ways."

Barbie Ferreira jokes that she's "serving range": The actress stars in the horror film "Faces of Death" and the rom-com "Mile End Kicks."

"Faces" filmed three-and-a-half years ago in New Orleans. For Charli (born Charlotte Aitchison), it marked her first acting gig. Ferreira recalls that she "didn't even really know" the two were shooting together until the day before their scenes. When Charli showed up, the two quickly bonded by "smoking cigarettes and going to dinner."

"I'm like, 'You're gonna do great, b----,' " Ferreira adds with a laugh.

Margot (Barbie Ferreira) is an internet content moderator and comes across a chilling set of video clips in "Faces of Death," a reimagination of the 1978 cult classic. Here's what the new 'Faces of Death' takes from the original movie

In "Faces," Ferreira plays Margot, a content moderator for the platform Kino (think a fictionalized version of TikTok). Her job is to monitor explicit videos and determine whether they're real, AI or staged, and if they're a violation of the terms of service. She comes across a number of videos that appear to reenact death scenes from the original "Faces of Death." Margot's boss encourages her to keep the videos on the platform, but she believes there may be a real threat behind the clips. That brings her face to face with a serial killer (Dacre Montgomery, "Stranger Things").

Scenes from the original "Faces" are used in the 2026 film. Ferreira watched both the original and its 1981 sequel to prepare for her role. In the new "Faces," the 1978 version is described as a viral video before videos could go viral, which is accurate given how controversial it was at the time. The original movie was passed off as a documentary on death, but paired mostly staged violence with real footage taken at murder scenes and accident sites, blurring the lines between fiction and reality.

Margot (Barbie Ferreira) comes face-to-face with a serial killer (Dacre Montgomery) in "Faces of Death," a reimagination of the 1978 cult classic.

"In the late '70s, there wasn't just endless violence on our social media that you could watch," Ferreira says. "So people really were shocked by seeing these videos. They thought it was real and it was nauseating to them. In 2026, what is in 'Faces of Death,' you see on Twitter all day. To me, it was always just really interesting having this movie come out now because we already desensitized to this amount of violence and death."

Barbie Ferreira reveals what's on her phone these days

Ferreira, known for her role as Kat Hernandez on HBO's "Euphoria," says she still loves the internet but interacts with it much differently than she did as a teen.

"What I like to do is make sure my algorithm is for Grandma," she jokes, later noting she's a "single mom to three," a dog and two cats. "I really make sure that everything is dogs that are fluffy and cute little videos of babies. And if anything else comes to my algorithm, I'm like, 'Not interested.' So I try to kind of teach it to give me what I want."
