President Donald Trump drew strong bipartisan condemnation for his criticism of acclaimed director and actor Rob Reiner shortly after his death, with Republican lawmakers calling Trump's response "wrong" and "disrespectful."

Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were killed in their Los Angeles home Dec. 14. Trump responded the next day with a social media post saying Reiner's death was "reportedly due to the anger he caused others through... a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME."

"He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump," the president added.

Rob Reiner, Michele Singer, Romy Reiner, Nick Reiner, Maria Gilfillan and Jake Reiner at "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" Los Angeles premiere on Sept. 9, 2025.

There has been no indication from officials that Reiner's death had anything to do with his political beliefs. Police took Reiner's son, Nick Reiner, into custody, charged him with murder and are holding him on $4 million bail, officials said.

Trump's reaction to Reiner's death was quickly rejected many on both the left and right.

"Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered," Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Kentucky, who has clashed with Trump, said on social media.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, who also has been at odds with Trump, shared his post on Reiner and said, "This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies."

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) (L) talks with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) in the House Chamber of the U.S. Capitol Building on January 03, 2025 in Washington, DC. Greene and Massie are pushing back on President Donald Trump's comments about slain director Rob Reiner.

Rep. Mike Lawler, R-New York, called Trump's statement about Reiner "wrong."

"It’s a horrible tragedy that should engender sympathy and compassion from everyone in our country, period," Lawler added.

Christian conservative theologian Russell Moore, a Trump critic and former senior official at the Southern Baptist Commission, was more scathing.

"How this vile, disgusting, and immoral behavior has become normalized in the United States is something our descendants will study in school, to the shame of our generation," Moore, an editor at large for Christianity Today magazine, wrote on social media.

A police officer puts up police crime scene tape in the Brentwood Park neighborhood where director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer were allegedly slain in Los Angeles, California, December 15, 2025.

Trump's attack on Reiner stood in sharp contrast to the praise that poured in from other political figures and entertainment industry leaders for the Hollywood icon.

"Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen," former President Barack Obama posted on social media. "But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people − and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action."

Reiner, 78, repeatedly criticized Trump. During an MSNBC appearance in October, he said, "We have a year before this country becomes a full-on autocracy completely and democracy completely leaves us," according to The Hill. He told Variety in 2017 that Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency.

Trump often lashes out at political opponents, and in the past has continued that criticism after the death of an adversary.

Flowers are left at actor and director Rob Reiner's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, California, on Dec. 15, 2025. Reiner's son was charged with murder, police said, after his father and mother were found dead Dec. 14 in their Los Angeles home.

The president continued to attack Republican Sen. John McCain after his 2018 death.

"I have to be honest, I never liked him much," Trump said of McCain during a 2019 speech in Ohio.

Trump's criticism of McCain rankled some Republicans at the time, but he was unbowed and has maintained a firm grip on the GOP. The number of conservative voices speaking out after Trump's comments about Reiner has been notable, though.

"A father and mother were murdered at the hands of their troubled son," Rep. Stephanie Bice, R-Oklahoma, wrote in a social media response. "We should be lifting the family up in prayer, not making this about politics."

Many Democrats also reacted strongly to Trump's statement.

"Rob Reiner was a beloved Californian who always used his platform to make the world better," Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-California, wrote on social media. "Donald Trump making light of him and his wife’s murders is a new low for this petty, hateful man."

Known for acting in "All in the Family" and directing movies such as "The Princess Bride," "When Harry Met Sally..." and "A Few Good Men," Reiner also was outspoken in his political views, backing progressive causes and helping raise money for Democrats.
