A 660-mile road cutting through the desert is set to become the latest landmark to carry Donald Trump’s name. The president announced a major road project in Western Sahara. He claimed that it will be called the “President Donald J. Trump Highway.”

Donald Trump says 660-mile road will be named after him

The road, stretching roughly 660 miles between the cities of Dakhla and Tiznit, represents a $1 billion infrastructure investment along Africa’s Atlantic coast. Donald Trump shared a video on Truth Social showing sweeping desert vistas of the project, which forms part of a wider trade corridor connecting West Africa to the Mediterranean.

“Thank you to Highly Respected Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco — Such a Great Honor! I look forward to traveling the entire length of this Great Highway someday, hopefully soon! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” Trump wrote on Sunday.

The State Department also circulated the video, which praised the partnership between the two leaders and described the road as one of Africa’s longest highways. “Under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and thanks to the historic courage of President Donald J. Trump, the Moroccan Sahara has entered a new era in the pursuit of peace, dialogue and prosperity,” it stated.

Morocco has not officially confirmed the highway’s renaming. However, the tribute appears closely linked to Trump’s 2020 decision to back Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. That diplomatic step came as part of a broader deal that saw Morocco agree to normalize relations with Israel.

France and Spain later followed with their own support for closer cooperation over the territory, which has been disputed since Spain ended its colonial rule there in 1975. The region has since received considerable investment, including a $1.3 billion deep-sea port, tourism schemes, and renewable energy developments.

All in all, the desert highway is the latest in a series of attempts to cement the Trump name on physical landmarks.
