Eve recorded a verse on The Roots' 1999 hit, "You Got Me" as a still relatively unknown rapper
The following year, the song won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group
While Erykah Badu, who was also featured on the track, also earned a Grammy, Eve did not initially receive one, a wrong that was corrected at the 2026 Grammys
Eve was honored to accept an award over two decades in the making.
The rapper collaborated with The Roots in 1999 on their single, "You Got Me," which also features Erykah Badu. At the time the single was released, Eve was still an up-and-comer. It was nine months before her solo album Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady, was released.
The soulful single was a hit, winning a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2000. While The Roots and Badu were given the honor, Eve was not because she wasn't credited on the track.
The fact recently came to the attention of Recording Academy president Harvey Mason Jr., who spoke about how the decision to right that wrong was "really simple" during the ceremony held at the Fairmont Century Plaza on Thursday, Jan. 29.

"We needed to make it right, and it was a chance for us to make it right. So tonight, the Recording Academy is here to offer a much-deserved respect and recognition," he said.
In her acceptance speech, Eve admitted she was surprised by the decision, which comes 27 years after the single's release.
"This is actually for little Eve from Philly, the little girl who loved to write rhymes and just wanted to be in the business," she began.
"I’m truly, truly grateful to be in this room with all of you here, all of the greats, people who inspired me, my peers."
Eve recalled getting the news she would be awarded her Grammy, joking, "I remember when y’all called me, I was a little tipsy. I had a few martinis out with a friend, and I kind of was like, ‘Wow, what is yours never can miss you, even 30 years later.' So I’m truly grateful for this."
In 2024, Eve and The Roots' Questlove discussed the since-corrected technicality during an episode of his podcast, Questlove Supreme.
Questlove explained that the song was recorded across two different studios and he didn't hear it cohesively until he mixed it, at which point the album was two weeks overdue and the credits had already been handed in. He added that when they shot the video, he was asked why Eve hadn't been invited, something he thought other members of the group handled.
“We were extremely inconsiderate and so insular and so non-communicative with each other that things like that always spilled on the sidelines. But I never wanted you to think it was a thing where I was like, ‘Let me erase her out of history,' " Questlove told the rapper.
Eve revealed that she had been invited to the video shoot, but through a "miscommunication," she was given the wrong address and took it as the group not wanting her to appear. She added that she has since performed the song with a group a handful of times and there was no lingering bad blood.
