The Last of Us debuted in 2023 to widespread acclaim as a high-stakes, emotionally resonant video game adaptation, earning a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score. While it became a global hit initially, Season 2 faced growing scepticism and audience disappointment, with its RT score dropping to around 42%.

Season 3 production is underway, with filming set to start around April 2026 and a likely premiere in 2027. HBO has ordered the season, adapting further from the game, but its future beyond that is uncertain. Now, HBO’s boss Casey Bloys has given some cryptic hints about the future of the show.

In a recent interview with Deadline, when asked about the third season being the last season, Bloys said, “It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.”

While not a confirmed answer, it’s the closest we have gotten to one from the HBO boss. Last May, showrunner Craig Mazin stated a fourth season was likely. “But certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.” (via Collider)

While this seems to conflict with Bloys’ recent comments, Mazin spoke almost nine months ago – and the industry is notoriously famous for shifting plans. So really, there’s no telling, but if Bloys’ words are to be believed, this may be the last, but he still has left room for the showrunners' input.
