Toni Collette tells PEOPLE that working with Kate Winslet on Winslet's directorial debut Goodbye June was a "dream come true"

Winslet has said that she wanted to collaborate with Collette as far back as 2016

Goodbye June is in select theaters Dec. 12 and begins streaming on Netflix Dec. 24

Toni Collette and Kate Winslet are finally appearing onscreen together in their new movie Goodbye June. For Winslet, 50, the collaboration was the fruition of a years-long desire to work with Collette, 53.

"Dream come true. I've been saying it for years as well," Collette tells PEOPLE at a Monday, Dec. 8 special screening of the pair's movie (which also marks Winslet's debut as a film director) in New York City. "I mean, it was more than I even expected because I thought we'd just act together. But when someone chooses you to be a part of their directorial debut, that's a big deal. That's a total honor."

Academy Award winner Winslet named Collette as an actor she wanted to work with all the way back in 2016 during a panel discussion with The Hollywood Reporter. Nine years later, the two women play sisters struggling to cope with their mother's (Helen Mirren) failing health around the holidays."And she's such a good director. I mean, it's no surprise. We all knew she would be, but she really is," Collette adds of Winslet's directorial skills. "It was just the most beautiful set, such an incredible atmosphere, such an incredible sense of trust and freedom. And she's so generous, and kind, and grounded, and funny. And honestly, none of us wanted it to end."

Goodbye June follows one family "when an unexpected turn in their mother’s health thrusts four adult siblings and their exasperating father into chaos as they navigate messy family dynamics in the face of potential loss" around the Christmas holiday, per a synopsis.

"But their quick-witted mother, June, orchestrates her decline on her own terms — with biting humour, blunt honesty, and a lot of love," the synopsis adds.

Goodbye June's cast also includes Andrea Riseborough, Johnny Flynn, Timothy Spall, Jeremy Swift and Stephen Merchant. When Collette spoke with PEOPLE at the Dec. 8 screening, she said that she and Winslet "had a mutual friend and we did kind of send messages once in a while" to each other before eventually teaming up.

"I kind of felt like we had some weird parallel life going on and we kind of had a sense that we did know each other without knowing each other," she says. "And now we do, it just feels normal because we already felt like we did. So, yeah, I love her. I admire her so much and I feel like she's the sister I never had.”Goodbye June is in select theaters Dec. 12 and begins streaming on Netflix Dec. 24.
