Nathan Fillion reveals where 'Firefly' animated revival stands

Nathan Fillion shared an update on the latest attempt to revive the beloved sci-fi series "Firefly."

The actor, who starred in the short-lived 2002 Fox series and its 2005 follow-up film "Serenity," revealed on July 27 that the franchise's animated revival remains in development during a panel with former costar Alan Tudyk at MCM Comic Con in London, clarifying that he’s "not announcing a series, but announcing the development of the series."

"Boy, it takes a lot longer than one would hope," Fillion said. "The development to get a show onto a television network or streaming platform. It's not easy work, Alan, or else everyone would do it, right?"

Tudyk likened the process to developing film photos.

"It's in process much like developing photos when we were young," Tudyk explained. "You go to a little box, guy who lives in a little house in a parking lot. That's how they would do it in the States, the Kodak part, and you drop them off to some guy who was certainly stoned, and you'd pick them up a little while later after he's done rifling through all of your personal images.

"So, we're in the rifling through the personal images part. We're not ready to pick them up, but when we do, you will hear."

The update comes months after Fillion revealed at Awesome Con in Washington, DC, in March that the revival would be animated rather than live action during a taping of his "Once We Were Spacemen" podcast. He also unveiled concept art and was joined by former castmates Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau, Deadline reported.

Joss Whedon, who created "Firefly," is not involved with the animated revival, though Fillion said the filmmaker has given the project his blessing.

"The dedication of 'Firefly' fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of 'Firefly' is something the fans want. More importantly, it's something they deserve," Fillion told Deadline at the time.

The proposed series would take place between the original 2002 TV series and the 2005 film "Serenity," expanding the "Firefly" universe while fitting into the franchise's established timeline.

In the meantime, Fillion will next be seen reprising his role as Guy Gardner in HBO's "Lanterns," the new DC Universe series based on the "Green Lantern" comics.

During a surprise appearance at the show's July 24 Comic-Con panel, Fillion, wearing a "Best Gardner Ever" shirt, joked, "Somebody left my email off the invite list for this panel. … I'm kind of a big deal at Comic-Con!"

"Lanterns" premieres Aug. 16 on HBO.
