Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s UK reunion with King Charles was kept under wraps for a single reason. Earlier this month, the Sussex family returned home following a four-year absence. The highly guarded meeting also marked Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet’s first meeting with their grandfather, King Charles, since 2022.

A royal expert has weighed in on why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s audience with King Charles and Queen Camilla happened behind closed doors. The Sussexes were all at Highgrove House to meet the monarch during their UK visit earlier this month. The King hadn’t seen his grandchildren since the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

The Palace did not release any images, and instead confirmed that the meeting took place through a statement issued later. Insiders close to the Sussexes disclosed details of the visit, prompting claims of “leaks” against the couple.

According to sources who spoke to Vanity Fair, it lasted for about “an hour”, and was “completely cloak-and-dagger, orchestrated by the King”. “They are keeping the meeting top secret,” added an insider. “They haven’t said anything to anyone.”

Prior to seeing the King, both sides agreed to keep the meeting out of the public eye with no photos or briefings. The terms were upheld, and those present are reportedly glad the privacy was maintained.

Additionally, speaking on a recent episode of The Telegraph’s royal podcast, 5News’s Chief Royal Correspondent Simon Vigar noted, “It was a bit special ops, wasn’t it? There’s no, as you say, there’s no photo at all” (via Daily Express).

“So four years ago at St. Paul’s Cathedral, of course, there were boos among the crowd there against the Duchess of Sussex. Nothing like that this time; they were sort of in and out. There was no public element to it,” Vigar shared.

Prince Harry is reportedly being offered a Buckingham Palace room for September, after his plans to stay there collapsed during last month’s visit.
