Steve Lacy just spoiled one of Marvel’s biggest secrets, and it happened in the most casual way possible. A red carpet slip confirmed the identity of Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s mystery villain, and it turns out fans had it right all along.

Singer Steve Lacy inadvertently spoiled a major secret during the Spider-Man: Brand New Day world premiere. The red carpet event took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on July 27.

During an interview, the host asked Lacy about his favorite character while urging him not to reveal anything. Lacy’s track “oh yeah?” appears on the film’s official soundtrack. He ignored the caution and answered openly. He said, “Jean. I like Jean. She’s the villain, but there’s a reason to her madness. I like her. I like her character.”

The clip spread rapidly across social media within minutes. Sadie Sink’s character had remained one of the movie’s biggest mysteries for nearly two years. Marvel Studios and the cast consistently dodged questions about her role throughout the press tour. Sink even joked about the fan theories in a viral video ahead of the premiere.

Lacy’s remarks effectively validated persistent speculation that Sink plays Jean Grey. The former Stranger Things breakout had been strongly rumored for the iconic X-Men role for over a year. Some fans had alternatively theorized she could be portraying Punisher ally Rachel Cole-Alves. Others pointed out that a character called Jean DeWolff also exists within the movie.

The revelation holds broader significance for Marvel’s mutant plans going forward. Marvel Studios did not announce any X-Men casting during its SDCC panel over the weekend. Industry buzz points toward a formal reveal at the upcoming D23 Expo instead. Sink had also reportedly been confirmed for Avengers: Secret Wars before Lacy’s slip.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31. Amazon Prime Early Access Screenings kick off on July 29. The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, features Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, and many others.
