Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

*Bohemian Rhapsody*’s drama wasn’t restricted to the screen: Director Bryan Singer was fired two weeks before shooting wrapped, but the on-set issues weren't loud enough to drown out the applause for Rami Malek’s performance as British rock icon Freddie Mercury. Malek received his first Oscar nomination — and win — for his work in an otherwise standard biopic.

The film tracks Mercury's professional success, as well as the relationship, managerial, and health problems that compounded as he and his band, Queen, shot to international stardom. From the legendary recording sessions that would produce the titular progressive rock anthem to Mercury's clashes with his personal manager/romantic partner, Paul Prenter (Allen Leech), the film has its weak spots, but Malek will make you forget them all. *—I.G.*

Chiwetel Ejiofor’s movie follows the titular boy (Maxwell Simba) who is kicked out of school because his parents can’t afford tuition. This doesn’t keep him from secretly studying science, however, as he builds a windmill that can provide power for his humble village’s broken water pump. In the fall of 1976, the world met Rocky Balboa for the first time, and running up the stairs outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art hasn’t been the same since. Every generation deserves a *Rocky* of their own, however, and in 2015, the franchise introduced us to Adonis “Donnie” Creed (Michael B. Jordan). The illegitimate son of legendary fighter and former Rocky opponent Apollo Creed, Donnie has been brought up with privilege, but still feels called upon to prove himself in the ring.

After convincing Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) to train him, Donnie prepares for the fight of his life — and so does Rocky, who is struggling with health issues of his own. The seventh addition to the *Rocky* franchise, *Creed* was successful enough to warrant two sequels, released in 2018 and 2023.

Field of Dreams (1989)

Daddy issues abound in *Field of Dreams*, a sports fantasy from the late-‘80s. Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) is an Iowa farmer who constructs a baseball diamond in his cornfield, summoning the ghosts of former baseball icons, all in an attempt to repair a broken relationship with his deceased father.

Ray Liotta and Burt Lancaster play two of the ghost baseball players, James Earl Jones plays a character inspired by writer J.D. Salinger, and recent Oscar winner Amy Madigan gives a strong performance as Ray’s wife, Annie. Adapted from the 1982 Canadian novel *Shoeless Joe*, *Field of Dreams* is a movie about baseball, fathers, and fantasies. Savor it: It's the kind of film that doesn't get made today. *—I.G.*

A Southern gothic melodrama as comfortable and restorative as a heating pad, *Fried Green Tomatoes* tells of Alabama housewife Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates), overlooked and dismissed in her marriage, who finds escapism through stories told by Ninny (Jessica Tandy), an older woman she meets while visiting a nursing home. Ninny’s stories transport Evelyn back to small-town Alabama in the 1920s and ‘30s, where Ninny’s sister Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) and her sister’s friend Ruth (Mary-Louise Parker) develop a deep bond after a shared loss.

Ninny’s stories inspire Evelyn to stand up for herself, and Bates milks her transformation from doormat to ‘80s self-help graduate. The modern storyline is fun, but it’s the drama in the past that gives the film its emotional resonance and rewatchability. *—I.G.*

The Greatest Night in Pop Music (2024)

The ‘80s were a different time, man. Back then, you could convince 45 of the world’s biggest musical artists to spend one night recording a song, with all sales intended to help fight famine in Africa. The song — “We Are the World,” co-written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson — facilitated one of the biggest and most successful charitable collaborations in musical history, and the story of how that one night came to pass makes for a pretty great documentary.

Narrated by the living artists who participated in the recording, the film is a shining example of what can happen when celebrities combine their platforms for good, and its relevance is particularly strong today. Littered with pop culture anecdotes and musical history, *The Greatest Night in Pop *is a lovely reminder of the healing powers of music, and a moving tribute to the artists involved who have since died. *—I.G.*

Green Book (2018)

*Green Book* was a controversial choice for Best Picture when it won the Oscar in 2019. The film is inspired by the true story of the friendship between Black concert pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), the Italian American bouncer hired to drive him through the Southern and Midwestern parts of his musical tour.

Set in 1962 during the fight for civil rights, the film depicts the microaggressions, injustices, and outright racial violence that Shirley experienced during his travels. But it’s also a story of male bonding and learning to express love. EW’s critic writes, “In a world that seems to get uglier every day, this movie’s gentle heart and mere humanity feel like a salve.” *—I.G.*

Hustle (2022)

"Guys in their 50s don't have dreams," says Adam Sandler's character, Stanley Sugerman, in the sports film *Hustle*. "They have nightmares and eczema." Stanley is unwilling to admit it, but he hasn't given up on his fantasy of becoming an NBA coach, even though he's spent his life on the road working as an international scout for the Philadelphia 76ers.

But when Stanley's mentor dies, precipitating a changeup in the 76ers' front office, Stanley finds himself demoted back to talent scout. During a trip to Spain, he discovers Bo Cruz (former Toronto Raptors player Juancho Hernangómez), an unknown baller with an undeniable gift. But if Stanley is going to convince the league to take Bo seriously, both he and the budding athlete will need to put in some serious work. —*I.G.*

Little Miss Sumo (2018)

This documentary short packs a lot into its 20-minute run time. *Little Miss Sumo* is the story of 20-year-old Hiyori Kon, one of the few female amateur sumo wrestlers competing in Japan. Tradition dictates that women are not allowed to enter the dohyō (wrestling ring). But Kon was a dominant sumo wrestler as a child, and refused to give up on the sport she loved as an adult.

*Little Miss Sumo* follows Kon as she competes in the 2018 Sumo World Championship, and does a great job of explaining the sport’s history and gendered limitations. Kon is a charming and determined subject, and *Little Miss Sumo* will leave you wanting to learn more about her and sumo wrestling. *—I.G.*

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

This eccentric dark comedy charmed audiences when it was released in 2006, chronicling the adventures of the Hoovers, a family that travels from New Mexico to California to support Olive (Abigail Breslin) as she competes in a children's beauty pageant. Riding together in a yellow VW bus that is disintegrating around them, the Hoovers confront their personal issues — among them: suicidal ideation, drug addiction, and failure to launch professionally — while juggling vehicular crises that threaten to prevent them from reaching their destination. The cast is stacked with veteran acting and comedic talents, but *Little Miss Sunshine* wouldn’t have worked without Breslin, whose committed performance as the intelligent and off-kilter Olive compels audiences to root for her. *—I.G.*

Craig Foster spent a year free-diving and following the animal living in a South African kelp forest, and the more he understands her underwater way of life, the better he becomes at connecting with his son. The Only Girl in the Orchestra (2023)

In 1966, there were 104 members of the New York Philharmonic: 103 men and one woman. The woman’s name is Orin O’Brien, and she was hired by Leonard Bernstein to play double bass. As the first woman invited to perform in the orchestra, O’Brien’s incredible story as a pioneer within classical music was captured by her niece, filmmaker Molly O’Brien, and won the Best Documentary Short at the 2025 Oscars. The film is only 35 minutes long, but it packs a punch, allowing O’Brien to reflect on her love of craft and 55-year career with the Philharmonic, which ended when she retired in 2021. *—I.G.*

Inspired by a true story, this sports drama follows a young man who is determined to play football for Notre Dame — in spite of his small stature, poor grades, and lack of athletic abilities. Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger is the perfect Astin character, a "5 foot nothing" kid from Joliet, Ill., hellbent on willing his dream into existence, and Angelo Pizzo's script can be counted on to score an emotional touchdown with viewers. *—I.G.*

Colman Domingo particularly shines as Bayard Rustin, a legendary LGBTQ+ activist who helped organize the March on Washington in 1963. According to Regina King, there are many elements of the biopic *Shirley *— the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first to compete for a presidential nomination from a major political party — that were a long time coming. King stars as Chisholm opposite her own real-life sister, Reina King, with whom she co-produced the project. As Regina tells EW, the sisters chose *Shirley* “because we realized there were far too many people who didn’t even know her name.”

The film more than corrects this, detailing Chisholm’s inspiring attempt to secure the Democratic nomination in 1972, and drilling into the sexism and racism she had to overcome in order to win the respect of her peers. And now all that history is available for you to watch on Netflix. *—I.G.*

Episodes 1 and 2 focus on Biles’ mental health issues during the 2020 Olympics, and her struggle to prepare for 2024, while 3 and 4 concentrate on aging and injury within gymnastics, and Biles' performance in Paris. Tyler Perry adapts and directs the true story of the Central Postal Directory Battalion into a dramatic and inspirational war movie. Kerry Washington stars as Maj. Charity Adams, the unflinching leader who battles racism and low expectations to do her duty and do right by her fellow soldiers. A coming-of-age movie that also explores gender roles and social norms within traditional Indian culture, *Skater Girl *is Prerna’s story, but it’s also that of other young Indian girls who have been empowered by the spirit and freedom skateboarding provides.
