A major character is exiting The Pitt while another is being upped to series regular for season 3 of the hit HBO series

Supriya Ganesh will not return as Dr. Mohan in season 3, PEOPLE has learned, while Ayesha Harris has been elevated to a series regular

New episodes of The Pitt air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max

A familiar face will be missing from season 3 of The Pitt.

Supriya Ganesh, who has played Dr. Samira Mohan on the first two seasons of the hit HBO series, will not return for season 3, PEOPLE confirms. Her exit is a result of a creative decision regarding her character's storyline. Dr. Mohan is in the midst of her residency and debating what her future will look like throughout season 2, so a change in hospitals would be a likely story for Dr. Mohan.

The creative decision also mirrors the experience of doctors, nurses and students within a teaching hospital, which often includes a revolving door of staff.

Ganesh's exit will pave the way for more screentime for Ayesha Harris. Harris has played senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis since season 1, and has been promoted to series regular for season 3, PEOPLE has also learned.

Variety was the first to report the casting news.

At the season 2 premiere in January, Ganesh, 28, told PEOPLE that she was "really excited" for fans to see the new installment because "we really get to delve into Samira's personal life a bit more."

"She has some really great moments that I think the fans have been craving," she said.

Reflecting on how the show has changed her life, Ganesh said, "There's so many ways I can't count. I mean, I will say, I feel so much love from the medical community. They really love the show, and I think they relate to a lot of moments my characters had, too, so that's been really great."

Meanwhile, Harris began appearing midway through season 1 as Dr. Ellis, when the night team arrives for their shift. At the time season 1 aired, the actress celebrated in an Instagram post writing, "episodes I'm in are starting to roll out."

"One of the hardest things to do besides the shooting is the waiting... and more waiting to share the work," she wrote alongside a clip of her in the show. "I'm so happy already, and my character hasn't even gotten started yet, ya'll!"

Ganesh's exit is the biggest shake-up since Tracy Ifeachor departed after season 1 and did not reprise her role as Dr. Heather Collins in season 2.

While the actress never shared her explicit reasoning for the exit, executive producer John Wells told The Hollywood Reporter in August that, like in Ganesh's case, the decision was due to the realities of staffing a teaching hospital. "Look, the show is set at a teaching hospital, and if you’re a fourth-year resident in a teaching hospital, your time there is done at the end of that year," he said. "People don't stay at these hospitals forever."

Star Noah Wyle said that the cast "loved" having Ifeachor on season 1. "We enjoyed having her with us very much," he told Deadline. "She's gotten really big and we will miss her."

New episodes of The Pitt air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
