Joe and Anthony Russo addressed the fates of beloved X-Men characters during an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. The directors responded to fan speculation about whether Jean Grey, Storm and Rogue will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in theaters on December 18.
Anthony Russo acknowledged the deep connection fans have with these characters. “The history of the X-Men is really special to us,” he told ET’s Denny Directo. He added that “all of those characters are loved and we thought a lot about their history.” The director confirmed these characters will have an impact on the story. “They will feed into this movie in a very meaningful way,” he said.

The Russos also teased additional surprises beyond the already announced cast. When asked about the chances of more characters appearing, Joe Russo kept it simple. “There are always more surprises,” he stated. The directors encouraged fans to stay for the end credit scene as well.
However, the brothers maintained their signature secrecy about specific plot details. Joe Russo explained their approach to keeping fans in the dark before release. “The reason why we stay so quiet is because when you have this experience in the movie theater, that’s the most fun version of it, we believe,” he said. He emphasized their commitment to preserving the theatrical experience for audiences.
The confirmed X-Men cast for Doomsday already includes Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Kelsey Grammer as Beast and Channing Tatum as Gambit. Fans now await confirmation on whether more mutant heroes will join the roster.
