A woman sought support from the Reddit community following a painful financial decision that left her feeling torn between obligation and survival. What began as an exciting overseas family vacation quickly turned into a source of stress, guilt and tension with her sister.

“In February this year, my sister had planned a trip overseas for us,” the woman wrote, explaining that everyone had agreed on a large Airbnb they all loved. By September, however, she and her partner realized they could not afford flights, adding that “our finances have been extremely tight” despite their efforts to save.

She described how deeply the money struggles affected their daily lives, writing, “We’ve been rationing food, using Afterpay for things like groceries and I’ve been feeling burnt out from the stress of barely making ends meet.” Even with both adults working full-time, they had also taken on Uber Eats shifts just to stay afloat.

When she finally told her sister they could no longer attend, she tried to soften the blow with a financial compromise. “I offered to still pay our share of the Airbnb out of courtesy,” she said, noting that their total portion was more than $3,000 and they had already paid half.

Her sister was grateful for that promise and still planned to move forward with the same property. “My sister thanked me for committing to pay for the Airbnb as she didn’t like any other Airbnbs and had her heart set on the one that we chose,” the woman explained.

She also pointed out the stark contrast between their financial situations. “My sister is a stay-at-home wife as her husband brings home $300k a year,” she wrote, while she and her partner earned a combined $120k and were raising a toddler.

Months later, the issue resurfaced when her sister asked for the remaining $1,500. “She is asking in the group chat if we can transfer the rest of the money by Friday,” she shared, before revealing that her sister privately suggested she could make payments after the trip.

At that point, the woman began to feel the situation was unfair. “If we couldn’t afford to go on the trip, why would we be able to pay over $1k for a trip we aren’t even attending?” she asked, adding that the vacation would happen regardless of whether she paid.

She clarified that her initial promise came before the full weight of their financial hardship hit. “The reality is that paying for a trip we’re not attending would put us under too much financial pressure,” she wrote as she questioned whether she was wrong to back out of the final payment.

Reddit commenters were quick to share their blunt perspectives on the situation. One replied, “Yes. You committed to something which other people were dependent on,” while another added, “You made the commitment, you have to live with that,” warning that refusing to pay would likely damage her relationship with her sister.
